Artificial termination of an unwanted pregnancy

Dr. Denis Slinkin
Artificial termination of an unwanted pregnancy is one of the most significant medical and social factors negatively affecting the reproductive health of women, says Dr. Denis Slinkin.

The World Health Organization defines abortion as the termination of a pregnancy (spontaneous expulsion or removal of the embryo or fetus) up to the 22nd week of pregnancy or until the fetus weighs 500 grams.

Further clarification of the term depends on the cause of the abortion. Spontaneous abortion, or miscarriage, is not induced; induced abortion is a deliberate, induced or induced termination of pregnancy.

An induced abortion includes a legally permitted abortion or an unauthorized abortion (criminal abortion). The term "medical abortion" by definition should refer to abortions performed for medical reasons, i.e. when prolongation of pregnancy is dangerous to a woman's life or health, or when the foetus is unviable or has a genetically caused malformation.

Dr. Denis SlinkinHowever, in practice, the term is commonly used for all abortions permitted by law, so medical abortion is often defined as induced termination of pregnancy performed by trained health personnel in compliance with all the requirements of the method.

Medical abortions are performed in a medical facility (maternity hospitals and gynaecological or general surgery departments) with the informed consent of the woman and with mandatory documentation of the relevant medical documentation, says Dr. Denis Slinkin.
